A Brief History
Thorncrest Village was laid out in the mid-1940s by the architect and town planner Eugene Faludi — two hundred and eight homes on half-acre to full-acre lots, north of Rathburn between Kipling and Islington. Residents own three parkettes and a private park with a clubhouse, tennis courts, a swimming pool and a playground. It set the standard the surrounding streets were built against.
The creek corridor behind the street became Ravenscrest Park, and links north and west into Hampshire Heights and West Deane. Three parks reading as one continuous green corridor — the reason every listing on this street, going back decades, has led with the word ravine.
Princess-Rosethorn is rebuilding lot by lot — new houses going up along Ravenscrest and the streets around it, on land that has been worth more than what stood on it for some years now. The ravine behind is the one thing that does not change.

The neighbourhood's working family park — two playgrounds, an outdoor pool, and paved and unpaved trail either side of the creek. The unpaved side is a real walk rather than a stroll. This is where the neighbourhood's children learn to ride bicycles.
The largest of the three — ball diamonds, open meadow, and the Mimico Creek trail running its length. Connected on foot to both Ravenscrest and Hampshire Heights, so the three function as one continuous corridor. You can walk from the back garden most of the way to Eglinton without crossing a major road.

The west end's grand Italian institution, with one of the deepest wine cellars in the city. Unassuming from the road and considerably more theatrical inside. This is where the neighbourhood books the birthdays and the anniversaries.
Modern Mexican on Bloor West — sharing plates, a proper cocktail programme, and a room that has quickly become the Kingsway's evening address. Open Tuesday through Saturday.
A Bloor West fixture for decades — white tablecloths, a wood-fired oven, and a room where the staff know the regulars by their drink order. The veal and the house pasta have not changed in twenty years, which is precisely the point.
The Humber-side landmark — dining room, gardens, live music and a long-running afternoon tea. Half the neighbourhood has been to a wedding here. Worth the fifteen minutes for the setting alone.

The closest proper Irish pub — a big, warm room on Dundas with live music at weekends, a long draught list, and a kitchen that runs from late morning to late night. The local for this end of Etobicoke.
An unpretentious neighbourhood pub with a very large menu, the games on, and a room that fills properly on a Friday. Karaoke at the weekend for those who want it.
A wider, brighter take on the pub — a rotating draught selection, a serious kitchen, and enough room to take a table of ten without booking a week ahead.

The west end's anchor centre, about fifteen minutes south — Holt Renfrew, Saks, and a hundred and eighty shops under a glass canopy. Close enough to be the ordinary Saturday, far enough not to be traffic.
An Etobicoke institution since 1969 — bread, a hot table, a deli counter, pastry, and a Saturday queue out the door. The single most useful address in the west end for anyone who cooks.
Two highway routes to the terminals, neither of which crosses the city. For anyone who flies for a living, this is the number that decides the address.

It sets the ceiling for this pocket of Etobicoke, and everything within walking distance is measured against it.
Ravenscrest, Hampshire Heights and West Deane connect along the creek into a continuous walking and cycling corridor. Hampshire Heights carries the outdoor pool; West Deane carries the ball diamonds and the open meadow.
